The African American Civil Rights Movement
The African American Civil Rights Movement refers to the attempts to outlaw racial discrimination against African Americans and restoring Suffrage in the southern states. By 1966 the people involved in the Black Power Movement wanted to expand the terms of the Civil Rights Movement attempting to achieve racial dignity, ecomonic and political self-sufficiency, and freedom from oppression by the whites. People of the NAACP, SNCC, SCLC and CORE call it the "Southern Freedom Movement" because to them it is about much more than making the blacks free, it is about restoring the south to the vision of what America had promised to them. The thing the people wanted most was equality. Which isn't really much to ask when you think of it. We are equal now in most situations. There are still those who take the time to be racist and won't see through the truth; the people who have grown up in older times and refuse to move on to new customs. The goal that they were trying to reach has yet to be fully achieved and it is the goal of the kids of the future now to achieve full equality; to make color nothing but that, color. And until it can fully be changed, until everyone can see it the way most do, their dream has not come true and we can't stop until we fulfill the legacy.
